Description

Thyme (thyme creeping - thymus serpyllum L. Labiatae is a blood line of labiaceae). Perennial rhizomatous creeping herbaceous plants with a strong aromatic smell, forming a small piece of turf. The stems are numerous, thin, rising. The leaves are small, opposite, oblong-oval, with protruding veins and glands. The flowers are small, bilabiate, pinkish-purple, clustered in axillary polumutanty forming a discontinuous cylindrical inflorescence. There are four stamens, a pistil with a two-part stigma. The fruit is four nutlets sitting on the bottom of the "cup". Highly polymorphic species (represented by numerous similar forms). Height 5 – 25 cm.

Habitat. They grow on sandy soil on dry open hillsides, steppes and in forests.

Chemical composition

The herb contains tannic and bitter substances, gum, resin, flavonoids, malic, ursolic and oleanolic acids, mineral salts and essential oil (0.1 – 0.6%). The composition of the essential oil includes thymol (up to 30%), carvacrol (up to 20%), n-cymol, α-terpineol, borneol and other substances.

Usage

Plants are ancient medicinal products. It is known that the ancient Greeks used powdered thyme as snuff for fainting. Plants are widely used in folk medicine in various countries for the treatment of many diseases. Water infusion of the herb has an expectorant, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, mild hypnotic and vermicidal effect. Herbal infusion is taken inside as an expectorant and anti-inflammatory agent for colds, bronchitis, pulmonary tuberculosis and other diseases of the upper respiratory tract. The infusion is also used for insomnia in adults and children, shortness of breath, women's diseases, chest and dental pain, abdominal pain and is used as a remedy for binge drinking and an anthelmintic agent for removing tapeworm.

In German folk medicine, an aqueous infusion of the herb is used for whooping cough, severe cough with irritation of the mucous membranes, catarrh of the bronchi and bronchial asthma, various gastrointestinal diseases: catarrh of the stomach, heartburn, stomach colic and cramps, duodenal ulcer, bloating from the accumulation of gases. Baths and compresses from the infusion of the plant, as well as pillows from the grass as poultices, are used as an analgesic for joint and muscle rheumatism, paralysis, bruises, and tumors. Herbal infusions wash the head for headaches and dandruff and rinse the mouth to destroy the bad smell. The herb is also used for refreshing aromatic baths. The herb is used to prepare the medicine pertussin, used for coughing.

Method of application

1. 1 tablespoon of dried thyme herb infuse for 1 hour in a closed vessel in 1 glass of boiling water, strain. Take 1 tablespoon 3 times a day.

2. 4 tablespoons of dry herb infuse 1/2 hour in a closed vessel in 1 liter of boiling water. Use for washing your hair with dandruff 1 time a week and for rinsing your mouth after eating.

3. 3 tablespoons herb thyme scald with boiling water, wrap in cheesecloth. Use hot pads as a poultice as an analgesic.
