Description

Acorus calamus (wetland calamus, lat. Acorus calamus - by the Acoraceae family) - a perennial plant with a thick creeping rhizome and a flat three-sided stem. The leaves are long, linear-xiphoid, sharpened. The flowers are small, greenish-yellow, collected at the top of the stem in a cylindrical narrowed spike. The rhizomes are brown in color, white inside with a pinkish tinge, have a peculiar strong aromatic smell and bitter taste. All parts of the plant also have a strong smell. Height 60-120 cm.

Origin

It is found in the forest and prairie zones of the European part of Russia, the Caucasus, Siberia and the far East. Especially a lot of calamus in Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and Kazakhstan. It was imported to Europe from Turkey.

Chemical composition

Rootstocks contain starch, essential oil (4.8%), acorin bitter glucoside, calamine alkaloid, gum, vitamin C (up to 150 mg), phytoncides and other substances. Essential oil — yellow thick liquid with a pleasant smell and spicy taste. The composition of the essential oil consists of eugenol, borneol, azarone, d-camphene, d-camphor, caryophyllene, calamen, proazulene and other substances.

Usage

Water infusion and alcohol tincture of rhizomes excite the appetite, increase the secretion of gastric juice and improve digestion, act as a calming, analgesic, diuretic, expectorant, carminative and stimulating the formation of blood. Infusion of calamus rootstocks by virtue of the content of phytoncides in it also has an antiseptic property. In the past, rhizomes were used as a preventive tool for epidemic diseases.

In traditional medicine, an infusion of rootstocks is used in the absence of appetite, sluggish digestion, catarrh and stomach ulcers, excessive acidity of the stomach, colic and vomiting, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal diseases, diseases of the bile tract and kidney stones. Rhizome infusion is also used as a tonic, general tonic, as an antitoxic and expectorant means and is taken orally for coughing, chest pain, cramps and dropsy. In the East, an infusion of calamus is considered a means to increasing sexual activity.

External the infusions of the roots are used for gargling in bad breath and to wash purulent wounds and ulcers. Calamus rootstock essential oil is used for odorant in the perfume and food industry.

Method of application

1. 2 teaspoons of calamus rootstock powder infuse 2-3 hours in 1 glass of boiling water in a closed container, strain. Take 1/4 glass 3 times a day 1/2 hour before meals.

2. 15 g of dry rhizomes boil for 15 minutes with 3 cups of water, tightly closing the container with a lid, insist the broth for 1-2 hours, strain. Take 1/2 glass 3 times a day 1/2 hour before meals lightly sweetened.

3. Take the rhizome powder on the end of the knife. Take this dose inside 3 times a day for heartburn, with water.

4. Mix 2 tablespoons of calamus rhizomes with 2 tablespoons of burdock rhizomes, boil the mixture in 11/2 liters of water, insist for 6 hours, strain. Wash your hair 3-4 times a week with decoction for hair loss.
