Description

A branching thorny shrub with grey bark. Leaves are short-stemmed, linear-lanceolate, green above, silvery-white below. Flowers are small, yellow, fragrant. Fruits-rounded Golden-yellow small bones, densely clinging to the branches. The fruit has a sour taste with a slight bitterness. Height up to 3 m.

The time of flowering. April-may. Fruits ripen in September-October.

Distribution. It is found in the South-Western regions of Europe, the Caucasus, Siberia and Central Asia.

Habitat. It grows in valleys and floodplains, on rocks and cliffs, and is also cultivated in gardens.

The part used. Fruit juice by the fruit and the oil by the seeds, leaves.

The time of collection. Fruits are collected in September – October, leaves-in May.

Chemical composition

Fruits contain lipochrome pigment, carotene (up to 60 mg), cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin, organic acids (up to 2.64%) — malic and tartaric, sugars (up to 3.56%), tannins, isorhamnetin, vitamins C (up to 450 mg), B1 (up to 0.035 mg), B2 (up to 0.056 mg), e (up to 145 mg), folic acid (up to 0.79 mg) and fatty oil (up to 8%), which includes triglycerides of oleic, stearic, linoleic and palmitic acids. Fruits contain a variety of vitamins and are one of the best natural vitamin carriers.

Application

Sea buckthorn fruit and sea buckthorn oil reduce and stop pain and inflammation, accelerate granulation and epithelialization of tissues, promote faster wound healing and have a multivitamin effect. Fruits in the form of juice, water infusion, alcohol tincture, syrup and sea buckthorn oil are taken orally for various beriberi (in particular, for scurvy, chicken blindness) and peptic ulcer of the esophagus and stomach. Externally, the water infusion of fruits and especially the oil is used for various skin diseases (rashes, weeping dermatitis), long-healing ulcers (for women's diseases in gynecological practice and radiation lesions of the skin and mucous membranes. In Central Asia, poultices of leaves are used for rheumatism. The fruit is edible in its raw form.
