Description

A perennial herb with a dirty purple branching stem. Leaves alternate, pinnate, dark green above, light below. Flower baskets are small, ovate, collected in long dense panicles. Height 100 – 150 cm.

The time of flowering. July-August.

Distribution. It is found in almost all regions of Europe.

Habitat. It grows in shrubs, ravines, riverbanks, gardens and vegetable gardens in moist soil.

The part used. Grass (stems, leaves, flowers) and roots.

The time of collection. The grass is harvested in July-August, the roots-in late autumn.

Chemical composition

The herb contains mucous and resinous substances, carotene (provitamin A), vitamin C (up to 175 mg), traces of alkaloids and essential oil (up to 0.61%). The composition of the essential oil includes borneol, cineol, α-tuyon. The roots also contain tannins, inulin and essential oil (up to 0.1%), which includes ketone.

Application

Wormwood has long been widely used in folk medicine in many countries. Herbal infusion and root infusion cause appetite, enhance the activity of the gastrointestinal tract glands, accelerate menstruation and childbirth, have a calming effect on the nervous system, suppress convulsions, various colic, relieve pain and have a light hypnotic effect. The infusion also has diaphoretic, antifungal and insecticidal properties. An infusion of herbs or roots is taken as a soothing and effective anticonvulsant for epilepsy, various convulsions, neurasthenia and other nervous diseases. It is also used for lack of appetite, poor digestion, gastro-intestinal colic and spasms, painful and difficult menstruation, and as a good remedy for insomnia.

In Caucasus, grass is introduced as part of fees used for hypertension. In East Europe, a decoction of roots in white wine, cooled and sweetened with honey, is taken for tuberculosis of the lungs and other respiratory diseases. In Central Asia, baths of decoction of herbs are taken for colds, and crushed leaves are applied to wounds for their healing.

Method of application

1. 3 teaspoons of dry herb of mugwort insist 4 hours in 1.5 cups of boiling water in a closed container, strain. Take 1/4 cup 3-4 times a day for 1/2 hour before meals.

2. 1 tablespoon of roots insist 4 hours in 1/2 liter of boiling water in a closed container, strain. Take 1/2 cup 2 times a day before meals (especially as a means of increasing menstruation).

3. 1 tablespoon of roots cook for 10 minutes in 1/2 liter of white grape wine, infuse for 2 hours, strain. Take 1 tablespoon 3 times a day before meals.
