Geraniums are perennial herbaceous plants with opposite palmate leaves and purplish-purple flowers with five separate petals and ten stamens. Flowers are collected in axillary polychrome poluzontiki, rarely single. All parts of geraniums have the smell of essential oils. Height 20 – 60 cm.

The time of flowering. June-August.

Habitat. Geraniums grow in shrubs, forests, meadows, and ravines.

The part used. Grass (stems, leaves, flowers), flowers and roots.

The time of collection. Grass and flowers are collected in June – August, roots-in September – October.

Chemical composition

Geraniums contain a lot of tannins (flowers-over 16%), carotene, vitamin C.


Infusion of various types of geranium has astringent, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and hemostatic effects and the property of dissolving deposits in kidney stones, rheumatism and gout. An infusion of the herb is used for diarrhea, dysentery, severe children's diarrhea, kidney stones, rheumatism, gout, and as a hemostatic agent for uterine, pulmonary and nasal bleeding. In folk medicine of Central Asia, a decoction of roots is taken for diarrhea, gastrointestinal and chest pain, hemoptysis, various internal bleeding and uterine bleeding in the postpartum period. In German folk medicine, an infusion of the herb is used for gastrointestinal diseases (diarrhea, gastrointestinal catarrh), pulmonary bleeding, as well as for kidney stones, gout and rheumatism. Externally, the herb infusion is used for local baths, washings and lotions for ulcers, festering cuts, ulcers and skin diseases accompanied by itching of the skin. A decoction of the herb is used for baths for broken bones, for gargling for sore throats, and for washing the head for hair loss. A poultice of the herb is used for removing corns.

Method of application

2 teaspoons of dry herb infused for 8 hours in 2 cups of cold boiled water. Drink the infusion in SIPS repeatedly throughout the day.
