Description

A tall shrub with grayish-brown bark and regular elliptical sharp leaves. The flowers are small, greenish-white. Fruits - first red, and then black drupes. Height 4 – 7 m.

Distribution. It is found almost throughout the forest-steppe zone of the European part, in Siberia and the far East.

Habitat. It grows in forests and shrubs, on dry swamps.

Chemical composition

The bark contains 3-5% anthraglucosides-derivatives of anthraquinone, which, as acting principles, enhance peristalsis of the large intestine. This includes the main active substance glucoside frangulin, as well as emodin and isoemodin. The bark also contains methyl chrysazin and framelevel acid, anthranol, resin, traces of essential oil. The plant is poisonous.

Application

Dry bark has a slow laxative effect, manifested in 8 to 10 hours after ingestion, fresh bark-emetic effect. An infusion or decoction of the bark is used for chronic constipation and sluggish intestinal function. Decoction of roots is drunk for pain in the stomach and intestines. Buckthorn bark is a part of various collections: laxative, gastric, anti-hemorrhoid.

Method of application

20 g of bark broken boil in 1 glass of water, insist 1/2 hour, strain. Take 1 tablespoon 2 times a day in the morning and evening. You should use the bark, aged for at least a year in a dry place or subjected to heating at 100° C for 1 hour; otherwise, the use of the bark is associated with the risk of poisoning (nausea, vomiting).
