Description

A tall fast-growing evergreen tree. Leaves strongly odorous, narrow-lanceolate or sickle-shaped, bluish-green, arranged in an edge. The genus eucalyptus has more than two dozen species. Height up to 50 – 70 m.

Chemical composition

The leaves contain tannins (up to 6%), bitter matter, resin, organic acids, esters, phytoncides and essential oil (1-3%). The composition of the essential oil includes cineol (up to 80%), pinene, myrtenol, isovaleric, cumin, capron and Caprile aldehydes. The main active substance of the leaves is essential oil.

Application

Water infusion and alcohol tincture of eucalyptus leaves have antimalarial, expectorant, strong antiseptic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Concentrated infusion of leaves, eucalyptus essential oil and especially eucalyptol extracted from it (pure cineol) have a disastrous effect on a number of pathogenic microbes: streptococci, staphylococci, pathogens of typhoid fever, dysentery and diphtheria.

In folk medicine, water infusion and alcohol tincture of leaves are taken for malaria (in pure form and mixed with alcohol tincture of sunflower), acute gastrointestinal diseases, flu and colds, and as an expectorant for respiratory diseases, externally - as an antiseptic and analgesic.

In scientific medicine, leaf extract and eucalyptus oil are used for inhalation in respiratory diseases, laryngitis, tracheitis, catarrhal and putrid bronchitis, lung abscesses. Decoction and infusion of leaves are used for washing and lotions for purulent wounds, ulcers, abscesses, phlegmons, purulent mastitis and some pustular skin diseases. Infusion of leaves is also used in gynecological practice — for erosions and ulcers of the cervix. Eucalyptus leaves are used to produce essential eucalyptus oil. It is part of eucalyptus-menthol cough tablets. Eucalyptus oil is used for inhalation in respiratory diseases and for rubbing in neuralgia and rheumatic pain. It also serves as a good tool to repel mosquitoes and midges.

Method of application

1. 10 g. leaves infuse for 2 hours in 1 cup of boiling water in a closed container, cool to room temperature. Use for rinsing.

2. 30 g. leaves cook for 30 minutes in 1 cup of water with frequent stirring. A glass of broth to dilute 1 l. warm boiled water. Use for washing purulent wounds and ulcers.

3. Alcohol tincture of eucalyptus take 20-30 drops with 1/4 cup of cooled boiled water 3 times a day for various coughs.
