Description

A tall shrub with opposite ovate leaves with parallel venation. The flowers are small, sessile, greenish-yellow, collected in head-shaped inflorescences. Fruits are sweet and sour drupes with an oblong drupe. Height 2 – 4 m.

The time of flowering. April-May. It bears fruit in August and September.

Habitat. It grows in mountains and forests. Farmed in the gardens.

The part used. Fruits, leaves, bark and roots.

The time of collection. Fruits are collected in August – September, leaves-in April – May, bark-in early spring, roots-in late autumn.

Chemical composition

Fruits contain sugar, organic acids, tannins and colouring materials, vitamins, and phytoncides. The bark contains the glycoside kornin, tannins and colorants, and organic acids. The leaves contain vitamins C and E.

Application

Fruits have astringent, bactericidal, analgesic, anti-scurvy, restorative and tonic effects. The roots and bark have anti-malarial properties. The bark has a tonic and stimulating effect. Decoction and infusion of fruits are used for diarrhea. It was found that the fruit has a bactericidal effect on the bacteria of the typhoid-dysentery group. Studies have shown a positive effect of a mixture of extracts of dogwood and wild pear fruit in diarrhea. Fruits are widely used in avitaminosis.

In Caucasus, a decoction of dogwood roots is taken inside for rheumatism and a decoction of fruit stones — for diarrhea. In Chinese folk medicine, the fruit is used as a restorative and tonic, for tuberculosis, pain in the lumbar region, frequent urination and tinnitus. In the United States, roots and bark are used as an antimalarial agent. Externally, a decoction of fruits in the form of lotions is used for headaches, and a decoction of bark mixed with barley flour — for boils. Leaf juice is used as eye drops.

Method of application

1. 2 tablespoons of fresh or dry dogwood fruits boil in 1 glass of water, infuse for 8 hours, and mash the fruit pulp. Take, pre-sweetened, 1/2 glass 2 times a day as a tonic and for diarrhea.

2. 1 teaspoon of roots boil in 1 glass of water, infuse for 2 hours, strain.Take 2 tablespoons 3 times a day.

* Wrap the pulp of fresh fruit in cheesecloth. The "pads" attach to the sore spot.
