Description

Evergreen fragrant shrub with grayish-brown bark. Young branches tubocurarine, white-tomentose pubescent. The leaves are opposite, oblong-linear, leathery, dark green, shiny, whitish below, with a sharply protruding middle vein. The flowers are two-lobed, pale violet-blue, with a two-lobed upper and three-lobed lower lip. The calyx bell-shaped, double-edged, pubescent. Two stamens, longer than the corolla. A pistil with a two-part column and an upper four-part ovary. The fruit is four brownish round-ovate nuts located at the bottom of the calyx. Height 0.5 – 1.5 m.

Distribution. It is cultivated as a medicinal and essential oil plant in the Crimea, Transcaucasia and Central Asia. Motherland — the Mediterranean countries.

Habitat. It is cultivated on plantations of essential oil crops.

Chemical composition

The leaves contain essential oil (up to 1.2%), alkaloids (up to 0.5%), including rosemary, ursolic and rosemary acids. The essential oil consists of pinene (up to 30%), camphene (up to 20%), cineol (10%), borceol (10%), 1-camphor (up to 7%), caryophyllene (8%) and bornyl acetate (2%).

Application

Water infusion of the plant accelerates the onset of menstruation, increases heart contractions, briefly increases blood pressure, has a choleretic, General tonic and analgesic effect. Rosemary infusion is used as a means to stimulate menstruation, for nervous disorders in the menopausal period, used as a tonic for depression and neurosis, and as a choleretic. Water infusion of the plant is used for baths and washings for neuritis and colds. As an external analgesic, poultices of young shoots are used.

Method of application

1. 1 teaspoon of rosemary leaves infuse 1/2 hour in a closed vessel in 2 cups of boiling water, strain. Take 1-2 tablespoons 3 times a day.

2. 2-3 tablespoons of young stems with leaves boil with boiling water, wrap in gauze. Use hot pads as analgesic poultices.
