Discription

Serrated-wintergreen or Orthilia secunda («Borovaya Matka») is a perennial herbaceous plant with creeping stems. Leaves are oblong-ovate to broadly ovate, with a rounded wedge-shaped base and a short pointed tip, serrated, on thin stems. Peduncle with several scaly leaves. Small green flowers are collected in a one-sided drooping "brush". The corolla is greenish or white, almost bell-shaped, 3.5-5.3 mm long and 1.5-2.5 mm wide. Carob anthers without appendages, dehiscing at the top of the holes. Column protrudes from the corolla; stigma with 5 broad lobes. Fruit-almost spherical "box", 4-6 mm wide.

Distribution

in the European Arctic, the European part of Russia (all areas except the Black sea, lower Don and lower Volga regions), Western and Eastern Siberia, Ukraine, and Belarus. It grows mainly in dry coniferous, mixed, rarely deciduous forests, in the mountains at an altitude of 1300 m above sea level.

Chemical composition

The Plant contains iridoids monotropein, coumarins, resins, saponins, bitter substances, many tannins, flavonoids, quinones (renifilin, himafilin), phenols and their derivatives (hydroquinone, arbutin, methylarbutin), tartaric and citric acids, ascorbic acid (vitamin C).

Application

For therapeutic purposes, use grass (stems, leaves, flowers), leaves.

Orthilia secunda is widely known in folk medicine as a means of treating gynecological diseases of an inflammatory nature, it is used for infertility, bleeding, puerilism, cervical erosion, menstrual cycle disorders, pregnancy toxicosis, uterine fibroids with profuse bleeding.

Infusion, decoctions, tinctures are used inside as a diuretic for cystitis and kidney diseases. Decoction of leaves is used as a wound-healing, hemostatic, astringent, after childbirth, for hemoptysis, hemorrhoids, for the treatment of purulent wounds. Infusion of leaves is drunk for diarrhea. Leaves are a replacement for tea.

Methods of application

1. 2 tablespoons of crushed herbs for 2 cups of boiling water, insist for 2 hours, strain. Take 1/3-1/2 glass 3-4 times a day before meals for hemoptysis.

2. 3 tablespoons of chopped herbs to 2 cups of water, boil on low heat for 5 minutes, insist for 1 hour, strain. Take 2-3 tablespoons 3 times a day before meals for uterine fibroids. The decoction can be used for douching with cervical erosion.

3. 30 g of crushed dry grass to 200 g of 40% alcohol, infuse for 10 days. Take 25-30 drops with water for hemorrhoids.
