Description

Semi-shrub with creeping spiny white-coated shoots. The leaves are trifoliate, with rhombic-ovate leaves. The flowers are white, with many stamens and pistils, collected in thyroid racemes. The fruits are black with a bluish tinge of collected drupes. Height 60 – 150 cm.

The time of flowering. June-August.

Habitat. Grows along the banks of rivers, ravines, bluffs, and shrubs.

The time of collection. Leaves and juice of the plant are collected in June – August, fruits-in August – September, roots-in autumn.

Chemical composition

Fruits contain sugars (glucose-3.16%, fructose-3.14%, sucrose-0.95%), pectin and tannins, organic acids (mainly malic), carotene (0.5 mg), vitamin C (5 mg), B vitamins, potassium salts, copper, manganese.

Application

Blackberries are widely used in folk medicine. Its leaves have astringent, diaphoretic, hemostatic, "blood purifying", analgesic and wound healing effects. The leaves also have an antiseptic (antiputrefactive) property, improve intestinal peristalsis, and purify wounds from pus. The roots have diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties. The fruit and juice of blackberries quench thirst well and are an antipyretic. Mature fruits act as a mild laxative for constipation and as a diaphoretic, while unripe fruits excite the digestive system and act as an astringent for diarrhea.

Infusion of leaves is taken for diarrhea and as a diaphoretic for colds, used for rinsing with sore throats and inflammatory processes of the oral cavity. Crushed leaves are applied to lichen, chronic ulcers and purulent wounds. In German folk medicine, an infusion of leaves is used for diarrhea, stomach bleeding, heavy menstruation, respiratory diseases and as a "blood purifier" for various skin diseases.
