Description

A shrub with palmately lobed leaves that have a pleasant smell, and black fragrant berries collected in drooping brushes. Height 60 – 130 cm.

The time of flowering. May-June. Fruits ripen in July and August.

Distribution. It is found in the wild in the middle zone of the European part, in Western Siberia. Widely cultivated.

Habitat. It grows in wet shrubs, forests, floodplains, along the edges of swamps and wet meadows. Bred in the gardens.

The part used. Leaves and berries.

The time of collection. Leaves are collected in may – June, fruits-in July — August.

Chemical composition

Berries contain sugars (up to 16.8%), organic acids (2.5 – 4.5%) — malic, citric, tartaric, amber, salicylic, phosphoric; pectin substances (up to 0.5%), tannins (up to 0.43%), anthocyanin coloring substances —delphinidin and their glucosides, quercetin and isoquercetin, a lot of ascorbic acid- vitamin C (100 – 300 mg), vitamins B1 (0.14 mg), B2 (0.7 mg), a (carotene), p( citrin) and essential oil. The leaves contain ascorbic acid-vitamin C and essential oil, which includes d-pinene, 1 - and d-sabinene, d-caryophyllene, terpene alcohol and phenols.

Application

Black currant is widely used in folk medicine. Berries improve appetite, stimulate the activity of the stomach and intestines, stop colic, increase the secretion of sweat, urine, stop diarrhea and have a general tonic effect due to the content of various vitamins. The leaves have a strong diaphoretic and diuretic effect, free the body from purine substances and excess uric acid, and therefore serve as a good remedy for rheumatic disease and gout. The leaves also have an anti-inflammatory effect.

Berries, as a multivitamin agent, are used for acute lack of vitamins in the body (avitaminosis), anemia and debilitating diseases. Water infusion of berries is used as a diaphoretic, antipyretic and diuretic. Infusion of berries is also taken for colds, coughs, hoarseness of the voice. Berry juice is drunk for diarrhea, achilia, stomach catarrh. Berry juice, diluted with water, is used for rinsing with sore throats and inflammatory processes of the pharynx and oral cavity.

In folk medicine, water infusion of leaves or decoction of leaves and stems is taken for dropsy, joint pain, rheumatic disease, gout, bladder stones, urinary retention, skin diseases and is used as a diaphoretic for colds and as an external anti-inflammatory agent for scrofula. Children with scrofula are given a decoction of dry leaves to drink and at the same time bathe them in a decoction of branches with leaves. Black currant leaves are part of anti-gilt fees and vitamin fees. The leaves are used as a spice when salting cucumbers, tomatoes and cabbage (due to the content of phytoncides, the leaves protect vegetables from spoilage and preserve their vitamin value).

Method of application

1. 1 tablespoon of berries brew in 1 glass of boiling water, insist 1-2 hours, sweeten. Take 1/2 glass 2-3 times a day as a vitamin remedy.

2. 20 g of berries to boil for 30 minutes in 1 glass water, cool. Take 1 tablespoon 3 times a day as a diuretic, diaphoretic and antipyretic.

3. 1 tablespoon of leaves brew in 2.5 cups of boiling water insists for several hours, strain. Take 1/2 glass 4-5 times a day for rheumatic disease and gout.
